A new developer channel build of Google Chrome may offer a sneak peak at the future direction of the browser. When run in the Metro environment on Windows 8, the new build takes on the appearance and functionality of Google's Chrome OS instead.

According to reports, the latest Dev Channel release of Google's Chrome browser displays this functionality if configured to run in a special Metro mode rather than launching in the desktop environment of Windows 8 as normal.

The Verge reports that in Metro mode the Chrome browser's user interface and functionality is identical to Chrome OS. "There's a shelf with Chrome, Gmail, Google, Docs and YouTube icons that can be arranged at the bottom, left or right of the screen. An app launcher is also available in the lower left-hand corner," the site states.

While these features are in a developer channel build of Chrome and may not reach the stable channel builds intended for end users for some time or at all, it could shine a light on Google's intentions for the Chrome browser on Windows 8 in future.

With Windows 8 suffering from a dearth of quality Metro apps, Google perhaps sees its chance to tempt users with Chrome apps instead, and perhaps get some to switch to a Chromebook instead of a Windows PC.

Last month, Google unveiled a new style of Chrome app that can run offline and outside the browser. Dubbed Packaged Apps, these are based on HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS, just like the normal Chrome apps, but run in a container on the target platform instead of inside the Chrome browser itself.
